Autism Resources

Our sole passion here at ABLE Kids is to provide your child or loved one the skills he/she needs to live a full and meaningful life. We have collected additional local resources for your family, including local autism testing centers, mentoring & development opportunities, sensory friendly programs and activities, and options for assistance in paying for ABA Therapy services near you.

We provide local resources for areas in Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina, including large metropolitan areas like Atlanta, Georgia, Savannah, Georgia, Columbia, South Carolina, and Charlotte, North Carolina.

Sensory Friendly Activities

There are a large number of businesses throughout the cities that we service that offer tremendous sensory friendly activities. These places allow children to have fun without over-stimulating them.

  • Chuck E. Cheese
    • Chuck E. Cheese provides support to families who have children with autism and special needs through their Sensory Sensitive Sunday program. On the first Sunday of every month, they open two hours early, and present an experience that is less crowding, noisy, and bright.
  • Regal Cinemas
    • Regal gives everyone the opportunity to experience a movie with the lights turned up and the volume turned down with their My Way Matinee program. Children are encouraged to express themselves throughout the showing. All screenings will begin at 10:30 AM on the second and fourth Saturday of the month for a special discounted price.
  • Georgia Aquarium
    • The Georgia Aquarium is the first aquarium to be designated a Certified Autism Center. Essentially, this new certification means that any visitors on the autism spectrum or with other sensory disorders can enjoy the best possible visit that caters to their needs. The Georgia Aquarium offers expedited entrances, sensory bags, and designated quiet zones.
  • SEA LIFE Charlotte/Concord
    • SEA LIFE Charlotte/Concord offers Sensory Friendly Sundays, offered on the 2nd Sunday of every month from 10 AM – 11 AM. During this time, the aquarium is adjusted to best reduce sensory triggers throughout each exhibit of the aquarium. There is also a safe place or comfort room, which can be utilized at any time.

Is Your Child Different?

At ABLE Kids, we believe that early intervention is the most impactful when it comes to Autism. Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disease typically diagnosed during childhood. ASD may change the way your child interacts and communicates. With an early diagnosis and early interventions, symptoms may lessen over time. If you are suspecting that your child may be different, we encourage you to seek testing.

Signs of Autism

You may be able to see some signs of autism in young children. Some signs include:

  • Avoiding or having inability to keep eye contact
  • Does not show emotional facial expressions by 9 months of age
  • Not reciprocating when someone smiles at them
  • Does not notice when others are hurt or upset by 24 months of age
  • Lack of recognition when their name is called

While these symptoms do not guarantee that your child has autism, these are common signs that lead to a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

How to Get Testing

To begin the process of getting your child tested for ASD, you could start with your general practitioner, who may refer you to a specialist in your area. In addition, ABLE Kids has collected additional local autism resources for your family, including local autism testing centers, mentoring & development opportunities, sensory friendly programs and activities, and options for assistance in paying for ABA Therapy services near you.

Unlock Your Child’s Potential with ABLE Kids

Autism is a lifelong diagnosis. At ABLE Kids, we work to empower children who receive this diagnosis and help set them up through every stage of life. Each child is different, and their needs are unique to them. We take into account each individual’s strengths to work with and build upon.
