If you have questions about your child’s development, you may be wondering how to get an autism diagnosis in Georgia and what the process involves. Whether you’ve noticed differences in your child’s communication or your pediatrician has recommended testing, understanding the next steps can help you feel more prepared.
ABLE Kids helps families navigate the diagnostic process, understand their options, and connect with qualified providers. Georgia families with children ages 2–6 may request an autism diagnostic evaluation with our clinical psychologist, Dr. Aynsley Corbett, who is based in the Atlanta area.
When Should You Ask About an Autism Diagnostic Evaluation?
If you have concerns about how your child communicates, plays, interacts with others, or reaches developmental milestones, start by speaking with your child’s pediatrician. Share specific examples of what you notice at home and ask whether developmental screening or an autism diagnostic evaluation would be appropriate.
You do not need to know whether your child has autism before asking for guidance. The diagnostic process can help you better understand your child’s development and identify appropriate support.
What Is the Difference Between Autism Screening and an Autism Diagnosis?
An autism screening is a brief tool that helps identify whether a child may need further assessment. Screening tools are available through your child’s pediatrician, and some are also available online. A positive screening result does not confirm an autism diagnosis—it indicates that a more detailed evaluation may be needed.
An autism diagnostic evaluation involves a more detailed review of your child’s developmental history and behavior. A qualified clinician considers information from parents or caregivers, observations, and assessments to determine whether the child meets the criteria for Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Georgia families may request an autism diagnostic evaluation with Dr. Aynsley Corbett. Dr. Corbett is based in the Atlanta area and evaluates children ages 2–6.
The process includes written results, plain-language explanations, and treatment recommendations to help families understand the findings and move forward.
What Happens During an Autism Diagnostic Evaluation?
The exact process depends on the provider and your child’s needs. An autism diagnostic evaluation may include:
- A parent or caregiver interview about your child’s development and medical history.
- A review of medical, academic, or treatment records.
- Questionnaires about your child’s skills and behavior.
- Observation of your child’s communication, play, and interactions.
- Structured activities or assessments.
These components help the clinician understand your child’s strengths and support needs and determine whether an autism diagnosis is appropriate.
How Long Does an Autism Diagnostic Evaluation Take?
The autism diagnostic evaluation process with Dr. Corbett includes three appointments:
- Parent interview and developmental history
- Child observation and testing
- Results and feedback, including treatment recommendations
Families should plan for approximately 3¾–5 hours total across the three appointments. Some portions of the process may be completed virtually. Our team will explain appointment requirements and what to expect before scheduling.
How Can You Prepare for Your Child’s Autism Diagnostic Evaluation?
Before your appointment, ask the team what paperwork to complete and which records to provide. Helpful information may include previous assessments, relevant medical records, and reports from your child’s preschool, daycare, or therapists.
You may also want to prepare:
- Examples of your child’s communication, play, and daily routines.
- Notes about your child’s strengths, interests, and challenges.
- Questions about the diagnostic process, results, and recommended next steps.
- Information about any accommodations that could help your child feel comfortable.
Ask whether you can bring a familiar comfort item and how best to prepare your child for the visit.
What Happens After the Diagnostic Evaluation?
The clinician will explain the findings, provide written results, and discuss treatment recommendations. This conversation gives you an opportunity to ask questions and understand what the results mean for your child.
If your child receives an autism diagnosis, the next step is exploring services that match their individual needs. If your child does not receive a diagnosis, ask the clinician whether other support or follow-up is recommended.
